Association Awards

The Association has established a number of awards to acknowledge written and spoken endeavours in surface coatings technology. In addition, the Association may confer awards on its Members in recognition of outstanding contributions to the development of the Association.

There are two awards applicable to publications.

The Jordan Award is presented annually for the best paper published or submitted for publication in Surface Coatings International by a Member of the Association under the age of 35. Alternatively, it may be presented for an internal paper not available for publication. The award commemorates Dr L Jordan (President 1947-49). The Award consists of a silver medal and cheque for £200. Applicants must make a written application for the Award.

The Stern Award is presented annually to the author of the best paper, monograph, review or special publication, published by the Association in the calendar year, irrespective of the age of the author or their membership of the Association.

The Award, which was presented for the first time in 1995, is linked to the late Dr H J Stern, who was the Association's longest serving Member and long time member of the Publications Committee.

The Ellinger-Gardonyi Medal is awarded to the best paper presented at selected conferences and symposia. These technical meetings include international conferences organised by the Association, Section meetings and symposia organised by sister organisations.

The medal is awarded on the basis of 80% for the written paper and 20% for presentation and is open to Members and Non-members alike. The events selected requires all lecturers to submit the full version of their paper prior to its presentation. The silver medal is presented at the close of the meeting.

The Award commemorates Dr Marianne Ellinger, a former Member of the Association, who bequeathed to the Association a significant sum which formed the basis of the Ellinger-Gardonyi Fund. The Fund, which is administered by the Association, is used to stimulate education and training in surface coatings technology.

The Kekwick Award recognises the achievements of Student Members of the Association in their academic studies, whether they be full or part time. Awards have been made to students enrolled on the British Coating Federation's Open Tech Programme both in the UK and South Africa and to graduates of the Canadian Division Printing Ink Technology Course.

The silver medal is awarded on the nomination of the examining body and presented at an appropriate awards ceremony. The Award commemorates Mr L O Kekwick, a Past President of the Association and Chairman of the London Section and the generosity of his son, Dr R G O Kekwick.

Honorary Membership is the most important and prestigious recognition by the Association to those whose exceptional work on behalf of the Association, at a national level, or whose eminence in scientific or industrial work within the world-wide surface coatings community, it is desired to honour. It is only granted to those persons who satisfy very stringent requirements.

The Commendation Award, introduced in 1969, recognises outstanding and long service to the Association at Section level, or for service, on the nomination of a Section, in connection with a national activity.

All the awards are administered by the Awards Committee, chaired by the Honorary Secretary.

Further information on the awards may be obtained from the General Secretary (gen-sec@occa.org.uk)
