The UK Exhibition for the Surface Coatings, Printing Inks, Adhesives, Corrosion and Construction Communities
For more information and registration, please visit the main pages for SURFEX 2010.
This Seminar is sponsored jointly by the Oil & Colour Chemists' Association and the Society of Dyers and Colourists.
"Liar Liar Pants on Fire" is a long forgotten playground taunt used by children when one of their fellow pupils was considered to be fibbing. It's worth noting that "pants on fire" is a euphemism for the after effects of a jolly good spanking rather than a case for using flame-retardants in textiles.
From faulty electric wiring to unattended chip pans and vehicle fires to arson, fire claims a large number of lives and seriously injures thousands of people in the UK each year. It destroys millions of pounds worth of property, not to mention the costs incurred in lost productivity and profits.
With campaigns such as "Fire Kills - You can prevent it" much is being done by the Government and the Fire and Rescue Service to reduce the number of fire incidents through education, research and raising awareness. Whilst these measures are vital and commendable, fire is inevitable along with its devastating consequences.
Whilst prevention is not always possible, protection plays an important part in saving lives and minimising damage. The textiles and surface coatings industries have an important role to play. In passive fire protection intumescents and flame-retardants have a major role in providing safer furnishings and coatings. This seminar will commence with a short presentation from those who fight fire on the front line, the Fire and Rescue Service. The chemistry of fire will be described and more than likely some first hand case histories will be used to highlight incidents where passive fire protection either provided, or might have provided, a less damaging outcome.
The use of intumescents and environmentally friendly flame-retardants will provide the basis for two of the presentations, one applying to paint coatings, the other to textiles. Naturally with the objective being the same for both industries, it will be interesting to see whether the technologies involved are transferable from one to the other.
There will be an interesting talk on the proposed update to the Furnishing Regulations from a UK standpoint. This presentation, which will raise some very important concerns, is hot off the press, having been presented for the first time in France in February 2010. Other presentations will look at fire risk assessment, fire testing and inspection.
This event will not only appeal to technical employees working in the paint coatings and textiles industries, it will also be of interest to allied industries, architects, designers and fire fighting personnel. Fire affects every one of us so awareness of prevention and protection can never be underestimated.

The West Riding Branch of the Oil and Colour Chemists is pleased to announce details of its 2010 Forum. This follows on from the success of past years events continuing the style of a "Fundamentals" forum in spring followed by an "Advances" session in late summer.
In recent years subjects have covered some of the Major raw material groups, Resins, Rheology, Functional Additives. In 2010 the important subject of "Performance Testing and Characterisation of Coatings". Covering topics such as Interactions in Coatings, Multi effect pigment measurement, Field testing and Outdoor weathering the Forum seeks to discuss a broad spectrum.
The March Fundamentals Forum is aimed at Technicians, Students and new comers looking to expand their understanding of Coatings and related systems. It also serves as a good refresher for more experienced to update their understanding. Attendance also counts towards your personal training plans and possible future OCCA membership grades.
Please review the abstracts and sign up for this useful Forum. We can look forward to a warm welcome from the West Riding OCCA team.

SURCON 2010: What is the concept? The coming together of functional materials at a surface that then delivers active performance by or at its host is not by any means the preserve of the Coatings Industry.
In many fields the importance of pro-active performance at the surfaces of substrates is paramount to achieve the delivery of specific effects. A wide variety of industrial sectors with a vast array of applications rely on this arrangement to satisfy many demanding tasks. This Conference aims to explore the variety of approaches practised by different industries to stimulate innovation and creative thinking through cross - fertilization of ideas.
The translation of academic ideas and research into beneficial results has long been recognised in creating a value chain; however this is usually vertically integrated due to narrow commercial focus.
In the area of surface performance and delivery it is easy to identify many sectors that constantly apply such technology that could be useful to other sectors - but do they ever exchange their thoughts and ideas? Paint and Ink Coatings, Transport (including Aerospace, Automotive, Trains and Ships and Planes ) Medical, Agricultural, Metal Finishing, Electronics, Adhesives, Textiles is not an exhaustive list, but demonstrates the opportunity for information exchange between sectors of industry that might just provide the stimulus for your next winner at the box office!
The subject matter of this conference will not only be of interest through Company disciplines such as R and D, Operations and Marketing, but should also appeal to the creative thinking value chain from Academics, Researchers and Technologists to entrepreneurial Marketers. The same argument is equally applicable through the industrial supply chain where new markets may be apparent for raw materials, finished products and processes.
This opportunity to regenerate creative thinking in the time of an economic low could well help innovation in product development to take advantage of the economic upturn.
