1 March 2010
The Manchester Section of the Oil & Colour Chemists Association will hold their 9th Annual half day seminar on Monday 1st March 2010 at the Salford Innovation Forum on the Salford University Business Park. This year the event will start with Registration and Coffee at 9.30 am and the Presentations should finish around 2.30 pm followed by a buffet. This earlier than normal timing is to allow those attending Ecobuild at Earls Court on the Tuesday to travel down to London in good time.
Making the most of our resources, minimising waste, reusing and recycling are increasingly more important to all companies, not only does it make good economic sense, it also should help to ensure that there will still be some manufacturing industry beyond 2050. We have brought together an impressive array of speakers to help reduce your carbon footprint and contribute to the long term future not only of the coating industry but also the planet itself.
Dr. Brian Iddon has been Member of Parliament for Bolton South East since 1997, having been a councillor for 20 years prior to that. However Brian has a technical background, having a PhD in Organic Chemistry and been Reader in Organic Chemistry at Salford University as well as visiting Professor in the Department of Chemistry at Liverpool University. For 29 years he presented a monthly 90 minute demonstration "The Magic of Chemistry".
Those who heard Dr. Houshang Kheradmand of Dow speak last year will know that he is vastly knowledgeable and gave an excellent presentation, but with the time constraints was unable to expand their policy. We are pleased that he has agreed to present to us again and develop their thoughts on how the economical efficiency of ethical investment and Social benefit of industrial activities have to be added to ecological criteria for a sustainable industrial activity and demonstrate that any activities will respect the present and future generation needs.
Mark Lloyd and Charlotte Yates of Crown Paints are gaining a reputation for being experts in this field having made several presentations including one at a conference organised by the BCF. Obtaining reliable data from raw material suppliers and using that to produce a carbon footprint of the finished product has proved to be a challenge, include the durability of the coating and it becomes almost impossible.
Roy Miller is part of the B&Q Social Responsibility Team and will emphasise how important it is to ensure the long term future by everyone being innovative and using renewable resources rather than fossil fuels. Roy also has a technical background having worked as a research chemist for Cray Valley for 12 years rising to become Technical Manager.
Mark Shayler of eco.3 will focus on life cycle analysis and particularly packaging having a proven track record of innovative solutions to environmental problems over 15 years that are increasingly focussing on sustainability and carbon foot printing. Mark has provided the expertise on environmental issues on many TV and Radio programmes and spoken at hundreds of events, seminars and conferences throughout the world.
