A further enhancement to the services which BSI offer has arisen through the digitisation of their 'back catalogue'. This gives opportunities for access to withdrawn British standards which are now available in *.pdf format for viewing or purchase. For technologists in surface coatings, this is a welcome development. Many British Standards are somewhat superior to their successor EN standards, and were withdrawn only under rules which arose from political imperatives. Withdrawn standards are an important resource, particularly when tracing the development of technology. BSI say: "Withdrawn standards are essential for legal cases, historical research or when maintaining old machinery". They are also pretty useful for avoiding a loss of corporate memory.
