3 November 2008
The Manufacturing Institute, Manchester, UK
The Manchester Section of the Oil & Colour Chemists' Association will be holding a seminar on Monday 3rd November. We shall again be utilising the excellent facilities of the Manufacturing Institute, Quay West, Trafford Wharf Road, Manchester, which is easily accessible from the M6, M62 and M60 motorways.
The theme of the papers will reflect how important it is to tackle the problem of waste in general, and that generated within the coatings and printing industries in particular. We hope to convince you that by following the guidelines given during these presentations, not only is it possible to help the environment, but also to save money (and, in some cases, maybe even make money). It is hoped the presentations will generate much thought-provoking discussion and allow delegates an insight into how the coatings industry can impact in what is a rapidly changing world.
12.00 noon - Buffet lunch
1.00pm - Papers commence
Waste Recovery
Abstract: Anne will outline the legislation and guidelines that local authorities must follow when involved in the recycling of waste. This will lead to the facilities available for recycling waste water and solvents.
Management of Waste on the Production Site
Abstract: Brian will discuss the problems of handling empty waste containers.
Why footprinting is relevant to the coatings industry
Abstract: Carbon footprints are all over the media and being talked about for subjects ranging from celebrities to buildings to bags of crisps. Simon Miller will present on what a footprint really means, and discuss relevant findings from work completed by Best Foot Forward including a recent project with Crown Paints. Simon believes there is a strong case for delegates to be familiar with the methodology because demand for footprint figures is being pushed ever further up the supply chain. Best Foot Forward are leaders in their field, and the presentation will offer an accessible outline of key issues for newcomers, supplemented with explanation of the most critical points for more informed delegates.
A Competent Workforce: Developing Skills Without Breaking the Bank
Abstract:
Nigel will discuss the importance of developing a workforce that has key skills in waste management, with particular reference to the funding opportunities available.
Waste Challenges and How Approached Using ISO14001
Abstract: Jenni will present a case study of the Iotech group in general, and Liquid Plastics in particular, with the emphasis on utilising ISO14001 to show a continuous improvement in dealing with the waste generated.
