Abstract:

This presentation will highlight the continued importance and popularity of the achromatic colour space, especially white. What is the consumer demanding from this colour space, both in technical function as well as colour for the future? How does this reflect on pigment choices and formulation demands going forward.

Stylists and designers are dreaming up new ways to capitalise and inspire consumers using the emotions and dynamics of colour preference. Results of a scientific approach to understanding the complex link between object and colour association will be demonstrated using applied ecological valence theory, with the goal of creating tools which will help to truncate and optimise prediction of colour choices, reducing cycle time and cost across a range of markets.

Speaker Profile - Dr Trevor S B Sayer, Senior Managing Consultant - Expertas Global

Trevor obtained his Bachelor of Science and PhD degrees in Chemistry from the University of East Anglia & Cambridge in the U.K. He then carried out a 2 year Post Doctoral Fellowship in Synthetic Organic Chemistry at Georgia Tech. in Atlanta in the School of Chemistry.

He returned to the U.K. in 1977 and joined I.C.I. in Manchester as a synthetic organic chemist, developing novel dyes and pigments; after 5 years, became New Business Development Manager, developing a range of new speciality chemicals. Trevor moved to I.C.I. Paints in Slough and after a short time as New Business Development Manager in the Industrial Coatings Business, joined the Research Department to head up the Colour & Pigment Technology Group.

As a Senior Research Chemist in this group, Trevor had a strategic role to develop new pigment dispersant technology relevant to the Decorative and Automotive Business Sectors and spearheaded the development of new polymeric pigment dispersants and associated colloid chemistry, which was patented and used in the automotive waterborne basecoat market sector. Trevor continued to develop new technologies in colour measurement and quality control, alongside novel nano-pigment dispersion processing, particularly in high performance waterborne paint systems. When I.C.I. Autocolor was purchased by PPG Industries in 1999, the teams various achievements were recognised by becoming the Centre of Excellence for Dispersion Science for the global Refinish Coatings Business.

In October 2008, Trevor decided to broaden his horizons further and start his own business called Expertas Global. He now consults on colour and pigment dispersion technology with global corporate companies. More recently, Expertas has been carrying out research in the area of the psychology of colour and evaluating different tools to understand and predict the link between semantic perception scales and colour measurement methodology. This is an important growing area of research and Expertas intends to be at its leading edge in the future.
