Abstract:
Diamide wax based organic thixotropes are standard rheology modifiers that have been used for many years in the formulation non-aqueous industrial, marine and protective coatings. These products allow the application of ultra-thick layers without sagging issues after spray application on vertically positioned substrates.
The latest class of organic thixotropes out of the THIXATROL® AS and THIXATROL® PM series allow a more simplified incorporation and activation in terms of shear and specific temperature requirements compared to more traditional organic thixotrope classes. These benefits allow an efficient and easy manageable use in comparison to other product classes, e.g. fumed silica.
However, highly polar solvent compositions of the formulation often have an adverse effect on the effectivity of organic thixotropes. In this solvent segment in particular various types of alcohols such as Butanol and Benzyl alcohol must be named. As these solvents are being formulated to enhance the adhesion to the substrate and to reduce the amount of aromatics, in most cases the content cannot be reduced.
The new THIXATROL® PM 8058 is displaying the capability to withstand higher amounts of various alcohols and other highly polar solvent components. In this, but also in less polar, systems THIXATROL® PM 8058 is a very efficient rheology modifier and outperforms other thickener classes. This and the previously mentioned advantages make THIXATROL® PM 8058 the ideal rheology modifier in the sustainable formulation of industrial and protective coatings.
