Abstract:
Gloss measurement is an important factor in quality control to guarantee a consistent and uniform gloss of any product. The visual perception is depending on the observer, illumination and viewing conditions as well as on material and product properties. To measure gloss objectively instrumental measurement is performed with a gloss meter. Dependent on the gloss level and the application different geometries and functions are needed. The following article reviews visual perception of gloss, measurement principle of a gloss meter, when to use which measurement geometry and gives practical hints for special applications and how to deal with limitations.
