OCCA Weekly Webinars Series 16 continues with "Gum rosin-based binders and resins to reduce the carbon footprint" presented by Patrick Hillebrandt of Robert Kraemer GmbH & Co. The webinar will take place via Zoom on Wednesday 25 June at 2:30pm.

Abstract:

As industries accelerate the transition toward sustainable and low-carbon materials, biobased resins and binders have emerged as critical components in reducing the environmental impact of coatings, adhesives, and composite formulations. This presentation focuses on the development and implementation of gum rosin-derived resins and binders as renewable alternatives to fossil-based systems, with particular emphasis on their application in the coatings industry.

Gum rosin, a natural resin obtained from the tapping of pine trees, is a non-food, non-fossil raw material with a well-established supply chain and favourable environmental profile. Due to its reactive carboxylic and unsaturated functionalities, gum rosin serves as a versatile platform for the synthesis of a broad range of functionalized resins including ester gums, maleic-modified rosins, and rosin-based acrylics. These resins exhibit excellent film-forming properties, strong adhesion, hydrophobicity, and chemical resistance, making them suitable for use in wood coatings, industrial finishes, varnishes, and pressure-sensitive adhesives.

The presentation will delve into the structure–property relationships of gum rosin-based resins, their compatibility with conventional binder systems, and their performance compared to petrochemical-derived alternatives.

The role of gum rosin in enabling low-carbon and circular material solutions for the coatings industry will be emphasized, aligning with global regulatory trends and sustainability goals.
