Venue: Webinar
Date: Wednesday 18th November 2026
Time: 14:30 – 15:30
OCCA Weekly Webinars Series 20 continues with "Temperature Effects, Instrument Agreement, and Measurement Confidence: Emerging Technologies in Coatings Colour Control" presented by Matt Adby of X-Rite Pantone. The webinar will take place via Zoom on Wednesday 18 November at 2:30pm.
Abstract:
As colour tolerances continue to tighten across architectural, industrial, automotive, and powder coatings applications, the ability to obtain consistent, reliable colour measurements has become increasingly critical. Yet measurement variability remains a persistent challenge, influenced by factors including sample temperature, instrument performance, environmental conditions, operator technique, and differences between measurement devices.
This technical webinar will examine the underlying sources of measurement uncertainty in coatings colour control and explore emerging technologies designed to improve measurement confidence throughout the manufacturing process. Attendees will gain insight into the impact of temperature-induced colour shifts, approaches to maintaining instrument agreement across multiple locations, and best practices for verifying and monitoring instrument performance over time.
The session will also discuss recent advances in portable spectrophotometry, including temperature compensation techniques, UV control and fluorescence considerations, automated instrument performance verification, and digitally connected measurement workflows that support greater traceability and consistency of colour data. Through real-world coatings examples, participants will learn how these technologies can help reduce measurement variability, strengthen colour quality programs, and improve confidence in colour decisions from formulation through production and final approval.
Speaker Profile - Matt Adby - Senior Product Advisor, X-Rite Pantone

I joined X-Rite in 1998 and have progressed through Applications Support, Sales Account Management and Product Management, most recently as Director of Product Management, responsible for product portfolio management across the Consumer Products & Materials, Retail, Appearance and Automotive markets. X-Rite manufactures, markets and supports innovative technology-based solutions for global markets where colour and appearance matter, from inspiration through production, creating economic value while considering our environmental and social responsibilities.
In my current role as Senior Product Advisor, I lead strategic product initiatives and support the product management team through mentoring and knowledge transfer. This includes leading the development and launch of X-Rite Spectura, a handheld sphere spectrophotometer that brings benchtop-level agreement, advanced fluorescence and thermochromic measurement capability and connected workflows to the handheld form factor. I continue to work closely with customers and partners to validate product concepts, shape market roadmaps and develop strategic partnerships.
Before joining X-Rite, I spent 11 years in the paint industry across the architectural, protective and automotive sectors, holding roles in R&D, Quality Control and Production Development.
