Abstract
Dyes, unlike pigment crystals, dissolve in the application media to individual molecules. Such a dye solution is easy to make and results in the maximum clarity and color saturation of a coating film. However, the individual molecules have high mobility even in the cured coating, leading to phenomena like bleeding and poor solvent fastness. Further, colors made with dyes are prone to fading by UV light.
By contrast, pigments, though nano-scale materials, require a sophisticated dispersion process and due to the scattering of light at the crystals, can result in paler, less saturated, or even opaque colors of coatings. A key benefit, however, is the crystalline structure of the colorant restricts the mobility of the pigment in the cured film, resulting in excellent solvent fastness and much improved resistance to UV light.
With Hostatint A 100-ST we merge the best of both worlds: Ready-to-use concentrates of highly durable pigments with particles so small that the color properties of dyes can be matched.
