The market demand for functional pigments continues to expand due to their Swiss army knife nature – providing color as well as other attributes critical for coating performance and end-use requirements. For autonomous driving applications, in particular LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging), functional pigments are essential to maximize NIR reflectivity and ensure detectability. As with all burgeoning technologies, there are industry hurdles to overcome. The ongoing development of LiDAR based, 3d positional mapping technologies for use in advanced autonomous driving systems is forcing the automobile industry to adopt approaches to improve near-infrared (NIR) reflectivity of coatings and to question how best to standardize NIR reflectance measurement. NIR reflectivity data measured using an integrated sphere-based instrument, does not directly correlate with real world LiDAR performance. A practical, lab-based method to measure the angular dependent, back-scattered, NIR reflectivity of an object, over a range of NIR wavelengths, will be presented. The multiple development considerations highlighted, further emphasize the need for extensive value chain collaboration in order to optimize industry effort for the introduction of new technologies, such as LiDAR.

Andre has gained an interesting perspective on pigments through a variety of positions in Research & Development, Quality, Production, Marketing, Business Development and Technical Service. Currently focused on Automotive grade pigments, he actively supports new Industry developments including Autonomous Vehicles. Andre holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Delaware (USA).
