Abstract:

The Research and Development (R&D) at Blackburn Chemicals Ltd is focussed on identification of the most effective means of chemically controlling foam for a diverse range of industries. With this goal in mind, an understanding of the underlying foam control mechanisms complements the already large body of technical experience within the company. The current presentation covers formation of foam, detailing the important pertinent structural elements within and then progresses on to identify the two main mechanisms of foam control action. Finally, we conclude with examples of the different chemistries used within modern high performance foam control agents.

Speaker Profile - Dr Phil Cooper - Technical Director

Studied under Professor Bob Aveyard at Hull University and achieved a PhD in the area of foam control agents.

Straight after University I worked for a company called Bevaloid as a product development chemist in the area of organic defoamers. This company was later acquired by Rhône-Poulenc.

Moved to Rhône-Poulenc in Lyon France to head up a team of chemists developing silicone/organic defoamers for a range of aqueous foaming systems.

In 1999 moved back to the UK and have been working at Blackburn Chemicals for the past 23 years, my current role is Technical Director and I am presently responsible for product development within the company.
